ALOCIT SUBSEA REPAIRS
IN ARCTIC CONDITIONS

Alocit - doing the impossible - yet again!

For most coatings, underwater coating is already an unachievable dream but, even for Alocit, repairing coating damage underwater in arctic waters at one degree above freezing seems unbelievable ...

Yet, Alocit has been used to re-instate coating on 11 I-tubes under a spider buoy on a flexible riser system close to the Arctic with water temperatures as low as 33°F (1°C). The underside of the buoy is at a depth of 140 ft (42m).

Grit-blasting is used prior to inspection and coating. The surface area coated on each I-tube is about 9 sq ft (0.8m2), with a total combined surface area of around 100 sq ft (9m2). The divers use pre-mixed cartridges connected to airlines, delivering the coating under pressure through specially designed brushes. Feedback from the dive team showed application using Alocit via the cartridge system exceeded all expectations for productivity, with minimum spillage, no problems with pot life and fast application.

Applications are ongoing, with trials recently undertaken to prove the coating's ability to be used in conjunction with NDT testing. See the video below for some insight into how test samples were coated for these tests.

Research shows the potential for bearing damage from water ...

Research shows it can take less than 0.05% water contamination to substantially shorten the service life of roller bearings. In fact water's destructive effects on bearings can exceed that of particle contamination, with the most severe damage coming from a chain reaction of potential problems.

How often do you wash down contaminated bearings without realizing the disastrous effect this could have?
